Dorothy Shea Yazurlo, former Mayor of Laflin Borough, passed away Friday morning, September 9, 2022 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born in Buffalo, New York, she was the daughter of William and Bridget (Clarke) Shea.

Dorothy was a graduate of Elmer L. Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre, and Wilkes-Barre Business College. She was employed at the Social Security Administration for over 40 years, retiring as Director of Operations.

A woman of great faith, Dorothy was a founding member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin and was very active in the parish until weeks before her passing. She was a member of the Church Dedication Committee, member of the Liturgy Committee, Chairman of the annual Harvest Tea, Chairman of the annual Monsignor Phillip A. Gray Merit Award, served as an Eucharistic Minister, and was a constant presence in the parish community. She was also Co-Chairman of the Passionist Nuns of St. Gabriel’s Monastery/Retreat House, and Laywoman’s Retreat Organization, Co-Chairman of Bishop Hoban School Bazaar, served as Mayor of Laflin Borough from 2007 to 2018, and was founder and President of the Laflin Library Association. She served on the Diocese of Scranton school board for many years. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.

Dorothy enjoyed giving back to others, her extended family and her community. She was the matriarch of her family giving much love and support to everyone. She loved Notre Dame football and playing pinochle with her many friends. Her card playing gave her much joy in her life. She was a constant supporter of the Democratic party, active in many campaigns.

She was preceded in death by her husband Michael P. Yazurlo on April 27, 1979, brothers William and Jack Shea, and sisters Kathleen Balester, and Mary Charles.

Surviving are her daughter Sharon Haverlak and her husband Derrick, Laflin, son Michael Yazurlo, Dupont, the joys of her life – her grandchildren Connor Thole, and Bridget Shea Thole, many nieces and nephews, and godchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin, PA 18702, with Father Alex Roche, Pastor, as the Celebrant and her former Pastor, Father James Paisley, as the Co-Celebrant. Inurnment will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township, at the convenience of the family. The Parish Rosary Group will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary in the Church 30 minutes before the Mass. All are invited to attend. Family and friends may call from 9:00 am until 10:45 am, Wednesday morning at church. Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705.

Memorial donations may be made to Laflin Public Library 47 Laflin Rd, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 , or to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main Street, Plains, PA 18702 in Dorothy’s memory.
