Carol A. Downey, 63, of Kingston, died unexpectedly Friday evening, January 2, 2015, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Kingston, Carol was the daughter of Rita (Lavelle) Weaver of Kingston and the late Robert Weaver.

Carol was a graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School, Class of 1969, and attended Mansfield State Teachers College and graduated from College Misericordia, Dallas, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and her Master’s Degree in Education from Scranton University.

Carol was a teacher for 32 years at Northwest Area High School, retiring in 2006. She was the cheerleading advisor and active in helping students with their senior projects, and was past Secretary of the Teachers Union.

She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre where she was the Treasure of St. Stephen’s Women’s Club and served on the Altar Guild.

Carol and her husband and ”Best Friend” Bill celebrated 37 years of marriage together. Carol loved her family and friends very much and missed her special friends, Shamrock, Suzie Q and Teddy Bear.
Surviving in addition to her husband Bill and her mother Rita Weaver of Kingston are her sister Lynn Tracy and her husband Sean, Edwardsville, aunt Dorothy Kosmala and her husband Ronald, Kingston, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 10 am at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 35 South Franklin Street Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania 18701 with Father William Marshall, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plains.

Family and friends may call Monday, January 5, 2014 from 4 to 7 pm at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Memorial donations if desired may be made to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church 35 South Franklin Street Wilkes-Barre or the SPCA OF Luzerne County Fox Hill Road, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 18705.
