Thomas J. “Yock” Zurawski

May 27, 1944 – March 26, 2024

 

Thomas J. Zurawski, 79, of Plains Township, known lovingly as “Yock “to friends and family, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Mitchell and Mary (Baran) Zurawski.

A member of the Plains Sports Hall of Fame and three-sport athlete at Plains High School, he served his country in the United States Coast Guard upon graduation.  Yock continued his life of service as a police officer, serving 30 years in Plains Township and 25 years in Wilkes- Barre Township. He also served on multiple special task forces as well as serving as a mentor to other officers.

Yock also served the local sports community throughout the years, both on the board of Plains Little League Association and as a coach for the East Plains team.  He volunteered with many sports teams in an assistant coach capacity, including SS. Peter & Paul Girls Basketball teams and Harvey’s Lake Little League Baseball teams.

A member of the Plains American Legion, Joseph E. Conlon, Post 558, and the Fraternal Order of Police, Yock was a very-well known and loved character throughout the Valley.  His favorite pastimes were spending time with his grandchildren, as well as cheering on his Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Celtics and New York Giants.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother William (Bill).

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Kathy (Pesotski) Zurawski, at home; daughter, Donna Fisher and her husband Alan of Flowery Branch, Georgia; son, Tom and his wife Jessica (Kerr) Zurawski, of Venice, Florida; grandsons, T.J. Zurawski and Evan Fisher; granddaughters, Becca Zurawski and Alexandria Fisher; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family ceremony will be held at a later date.  Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA  18705.
