I was one of Phil's younger cousins. He was an absolute paragon to us younger kids. While we were struggling with the experience of elementary school, Phil was succeeding at Georgia Tech and traveling the entire globe doing great things. Absolutely nobody got into Russia, for crying out loud, back in the 60s----an amazing feat! For a while when I was in 3rd grade, I started signing my name as Phil so my teacher (who also taught him many years earlier) would remember the connection and take some mercy on me. And even to this very day I still tell people that I am not completely descended from white trash origins and I tell them about Cousin Phil and his accomplishments. This always works-----when you do a short list of his resume, it shuts down any doubters! If our family can keep turning out people half as good as Phil, we'll be fine for the future.
