William P. McDermott, 64 of Dupont, passed away Friday evening, April 22, 2016 at Celtic Hospice, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre, with his family by his side.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of Kathleen (Cunningham) McDermott of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre and the late William E. McDermott.

Bill was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Wilkes-Barre, class of 1969 and an Army Reservist, serving with the 365th Engineers Battalion, Wilkes-Barre, and a Navy Reservist serving with the CeeBee of Avoca. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator by Norfolk Southern Railroad until his retirement.
Bill was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Dupont, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Avoca, The Donegal Society of Wilkes-Barre, and the Polish American Citizen’s Club, Dupont, where he was the Steward. Bill was an avid Notre Dame Football and New York Yankee fan.

Surviving in addition to his mother Kathleen are his wife of 30 years the former Cheryl A. Plis, Dupont, son William P. McDermott, Jr., and his wife Krissie, Dallas, daughters Kristin Hoats and her husband Boyd, Forty Fort, and Erica Lee and her fiancée Don Eifert, Jr., West Pittston, grandchildren Brendan, Megan, and Tyler Lee, Emma Hoats, Avery, Brynn and Lucy Giordano, sisters Regina Modrovsky and her husband Tony, Wilkes-Barre, and Mary McDermott, Miners Mills, brother Andrew McDermott and his wife Marge, Fairport, NY, brother-in-law Frank Plis and his wife Denise, Wyoming, and sister-in-law Susan Russick and her husband Robert, Suscon,, several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 10:30 am in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church 215 Lackawanna Avenue Dupont, PA 18641, with Monsignor Thomas M. Muldowney, Vicar General of the Diocese of Scranton and Father Joseph D. Verespy, pastor, officiating. Those attending mass are asked to go directly to church Tuesday morning. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Family and friends may call Monday evening, April 25, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street Plains, PA 18705.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, 1000 East Mountain Blvd., Plains, PA 18711.
