William M. Dillon Sr., 80 of Inkerman, passed away Monday morning, February 9, 2015 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, Plains.

Born in Jenkins, Twp., Bill was the son of the late James and Margaret (O’Hare) Dillon of Port Griffith and was a graduate of Jenkins Township High School. He attended Luzerne County Community College and the University of Scranton and while a member of the military he majored in Business Administration at the University of Alaska and the University of Maryland.

Bill was a Korean War Veteran and served eight years in the Air Force as a non-commissioned officer attached to the armed forces courier service of the Alaskan Air Command and the 9547th Air Recovery Squadron throughout the United States and overseas.

Bill was employed for over Four decades by the Scranton Times/Tribune and the Sunday Times as the general production foreman and Journeyman printer (graphic-arts department) in charge of the composing room until his retirement in 1996. He was also a part-time news correspondent for the newspaper in the Pittston Area down valley.

Bill was a life member of the Jenkins Township Volunteer Fire Department and an officer of the Men’s Society of St. Mark’s Parish, Inkerman. He was the Public Relations Director for the parish and served as an usher. He was a member and organizer for the Boy Scouts Troop 304 of Jenkins Township.

Bill was an elected member of the Pennsylvania State Constables Association of Luzerne County and past president of that chapter. He maintained the permanent rank of Colonel with the Luzerne County State Constables. He graduated from the Lackawanna Junior College Constable School in 1992. He also was a graduate of the Lethal Weapons Training Act 235 and was a certified agent in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 30 years.

Bill was a certified Police Sergeant and Juvenile Officer in the Township for 10 years after having completed State and Local Police courses at Wilkes-University, King’s College the University of Scranton and Luzerne County Community College. He was responsible for organizing and training of some 25 volunteers of the township volunteer fire department members to auxiliary police with full police arrest powers in the township when they had no police department at all. He also served as auxiliary police chief and township Police Commissioner for several years.

Bill was a member of the Plains American Legion, Joseph E. Conlon, Post 558, Gold Card member of the Lithuanian Citizens Beneficial Club of Inkerman and Polish American Veterans of Plains Township and the Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO. He was a former Jenkins Township Little League manager, coach, umpire organizer and charter member of the junior football program in Jenkins Township. He was a Fourth Degree Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 372 of Pittston.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife the former Irene Zack on August 18, 2010 and Brother James Dillon.

Surviving are his Daughter Colleen Dillon, Pittston, Sons, William Jr. and his Wife Janet , Plains, Brian and his Wife Stacey, West Chester; Grandchildren, Stephanie Donahue and husband Joseph, Michael, William III, Allie, Sean Chelsey and Connor Dillon. Brother, Joseph, Port Griffith; Sisters, Marilyn Krall, Port Griffith, Kathleen Morreale, Dundalk, MD, and Margaret O’Malley, Tunkhannock, several nephews and nieces.

A Mass of Christian Burial with Military Honors will be held Friday, February 13, 2015 at 10:00 am in St. Maris Goretti Church 42 Redwood Drive , Laflin, PA 18702. Family and friends are asked to go directly to church Friday morning. Friends may call Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Corcoran Funeral Home Inc. 20 South Main Street Plains from 5 to 8 pm. Private Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plains at the conveniences of the family.
