William Hughes, Sr., 86 of Plains, and formerly of Scranton, passed away Thursday morning, February 11, 2021 at the inpatient unit of Residential Hospice, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Bayard T. and Ida (Seeley) Hughes.

Bill was a graduate of Scranton High School, and was a Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Corporal. Upon his honorable discharge from active duty, he returned to Scranton and he and his wife Dorothy owned and operated their own pizzeria, Gemma’s Pizza on Railroad Ave., Scranton.

He was a member of the American Legion and was an avid fisherman. For many years, Bill would grow his own roses and was very proud to show them off.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, the former Dorothy Regna, on June 21, 2012, sister Peggy Topa, and brother Alfred ”Butch” Hughes.

Surviving are his daughter Rhonda Grzymski and her husband Kevin, Shavertown, son: William Hughes, Jr., Plains, grandchildren, Kyra, Gabrielle, & Ethan Grzymski; Grandson Bryce Hughes, sister Karen Yerke, Taylor, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 15, 2021 at 6:00 pm at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc. 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705. Private interment with military honors will be held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.

A walk through visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Monday at the funeral home. Due to the ongoing pandemic, restrictions have been put in place. Those attending the visitation, we ask that you be brief when paying your respects, please follow the practice of social distancing, and masks are required at all times at the funeral home. A delay in getting into the funeral home may occur due to the CDC guidelines.
