Sylvia W. Phillips

June 25, 2024

Sylvia W. Phillips, 87 of Kingston passed away at home surrounded by her loving and devoted family on Tuesday evening, June 25, 2024.

Sylvia was born on April 12, 1937 in Edwardsville, PA, and was the daughter of the late Charles Elechko and Salomeja (Zloto) Elechko, and raised by her maternal grandfather, the late Frank Zloto.

Sylvia was a graduate of Edwardsville High School, Class of 1954 and was employed as an administrative assistant by Wilkes-Barre City Hall until her retirement.

Sylvia enjoyed spending time playing bingo with her friends at the Kingston Senior Citizen Center, playing cards with her card club friends, feeding pennies into the slot machine at the casino, and listening to polka music.  Sylvia was the Dr. Doolittle of the neighborhood as she would get daily visits from her beloved cats, groundhogs, squirrels, deer, and fox. She was very creative and had a knack for interior designing, crafting, and painting.  Her family and friends teased her that she was a self-proclaimed meteorologist, pharmacist, doctor, financial advisor, etc. as she always had advice and knowledge on almost everything.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Theodore Phillips, who she married on December 5, 1964, daughters Christine Englehart and her husband Dale, Wyoming, PA, Dr. Rochelle Speier and her husband Drew Speier, Kingston, PA and son Theodore Phillips and his wife Cindy, New Jersey, grandchildren Hunter Englehart and his wife Chandra, Tanner Mazur and her husband Zack; Michael Koury, and Theodore Phillips, and great grandchildren Charlestyn and Huntson Englehart.

Sylvia’s family would like to thank The Cancer Wellness Center of NEPA and the nurses and staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the wonderful care and compassion given to Sylvia during her final days.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Cemetery, St. Mary’s Road, Wilkes-Barre, PA with The Very Rev. Dr. David Hester, officiating. Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA  18705.
