Stanley B. Szafran, 69, a life-long resident of Henry Street, Plains, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 18, 2017, surrounded by his family, after heart complications at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born in Plains on December 16, 1947, he was the son of the late Stanley and Johanna (Mayo) Szafran.

He was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School and was an Army Veteran, serving proudly during the Vietnam War. Stanley served in the U.S. 1st Air Cavalryman where he patrolled the hills that surrounded the embattled Khesanh, Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart for his service. He was employed by Schott Glass Technologies where he was a grinder/polisher. While at Schott, Stanley worked on the telescopic lenses for the NASA Hubble Space Telescope. However, it was not his fault images were coming back blurry, as he always reminded us. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Plains, and the Plains American Legion, Joseph E. Conlon, Post 558.

Stanley enjoyed playing guitar, building trains, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and watching the Three Stooges and The Twilight Zone. He also was an avid watcher of the Scranton City Council Meetings; being a Luzerne County resident. Stanley was at his best in his sweats, on the couch, and watching the game “in peace”.

To carry on his legacy, Stanley leaves behind his amazing wife of 45 years, the former Jeanette Richard; five daughters and sons-in-law, who he could not be prouder of; Melissa and David Werner, Stacey and Patrick Hadley, Jamie and David Williams, Georgette and Edward Ferkel, and Kathleen and Francis Shovlin. He was Pop to his loving grandchildren Shelbie, David, Mason and Emma Rose; who he constantly encouraged to “Come over here so I can rip your face off” and to “Kiss me, my love”. Stash also is survived by his sister, Barbara Maloney and was Uncle Sta to numerous nieces, nephews; great nieces, nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends. His trusty companion Bach Dog and numerous fish.

Stanley leaves this world with few regrets. He loved his family above all else. His greatest joy was in spending time with his girls and grandchildren. He was kind and generous to everyone.

The family wishes to acknowledge and extend gratitude to the staff at Thomas Jefferson Hospital.

Funeral will be held Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains, with Father John C. Lambert, Pastor, officiating. Internment with Military Honors accorded by the U.S. Army and the Plains American Legion Military Detail will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
