Rita M. White, 89 of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Wednesday evening, July 5, 2017 at the inpatient unit of Celtic Hospice, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in the East End section of Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Charles “Chick” and Marie (Woods) McHugh.

Rita was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1946 and was a homemaker all of her life. Her main interests in her life were her home and family. She was a lifelong member of Holy Saviour Church, East End, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and the Holy Saviour Choir. Currently she is a member of St. Andre Bessette Parish, North Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilkes-Barre Police Officer, Fred J. White, Sr., brothers Charles and Raymond P. McHugh.

Surviving are her children Donna Balut and her husband Steve, Fred White, Jr., and his wife Debby, Marita Schappert and her husband Joe, and Kay Elick and her husband John, all of Wilkes-Barre; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and her best friends in life, Ann (Nancy) Elston, and Ann Marie Horn

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 11:00 am in St. Andre Bessette Parish, St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 668 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA, 18705. Interment will be held in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas, PA. Family and friends may call at St. Andre Bessette Church from 10:00 am until the time of the Funeral Mass on Tuesday.
