Rita M. Kearney, 88 of Jenkins Township, and formerly of Laflin, passed away Sunday evening, March 5, 2023 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, PA, from complication of the COVID-19 Virus.

Born on April 8, 1934 in the Georgetown section of Wilkes-Barre Township, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Nellie (Arasim) Kinsel.

Rita was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School, and was employed as a Key Punch Operator at the Social Security Administration. Rita was also a homemaker and was a wonderful baker. She enjoyed family time, sitting by the pool, and loved to go on Caribbean Vacations with her family and her companion Charlie. She loved shopping and an occasional glass of wine with her friends at dinner.

She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin.

She was preceded in death by her husband James G. Kearney on January 26, 1991, son James W. Kearney on June 20, 2018, brother John Kinsel and her companion Charles Draus.

Surviving are her daughter Colleen Volpetti and her husband Nicholas, Pittston, grandchildren Gabrielle Volpetti, Stamford, CT, Lukas Volpetti, Pittston, James Patrick “J.P.” Kearney and his fiancée Sarah Jones, Exeter, and Michael Kearney, Keyport, NJ, sister Geraldine Revitt, Wilkes-Barre Twp., daughter-in-law Donna Kearney, Laflin, several nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin, PA. The Parish Rosary Group will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary in the Church 30 minutes before the Mass. All are invited to attend. Those attending the funeral mass, please go directly to church Thursday morning. Inurnment will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp., PA. Family and friends may call Thursday morning from 9:00 am until the time of mass at church. Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin, PA.
