Michael “Mick” J. Smacher, Jr., 82, a life resident of Bear Creek Township, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, November 14, 2020. Born February 8, 1938 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, he was the son of the late Michael and Florence (Kresge) Smacher. Mick was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1956, and was a parishioner of the Abbott United Methodist Church, Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre. For the past 45 years prior to his retirement, he was employed by Carl L. Kresge and Sons, Inc. Mick served with Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 109th Field Artillery Motor Battalion, Company C, from 1956 to 1966, achieving the rank of Sergeant. Mick enjoyed fishing in his early years. Being a life-long resident of Bear Creek, he knew everyone and after retirement his new found favorite pastime was to sit in his lawn chair in the garage every day and wave to everyone who honked their horn as they passed. He was considered the Mayor of Bear Creek. He was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law Martin J. McCallin and Joseph “Rock” Stahovic. He is survived by his sisters Ella K. McCallin and Carol Stahovic, both of Bear Creek Township, brother Donald Smacher, Forest Hill, MD, nieces Donna Mandl and her husband Karl, Aberdeen, MD, Lori Chase and her husband Matthew, Bear Creek Township, nephews Donald “DJ” W. Smacher, Jr. and his wife Marla, Bel Air, MD, Rock Stahovic and his wife Robyn, Plains, great nieces Rebecca Mandl, and Ashley Chase, great-nephews Michael and Matthew Smacher, Ryan Mandl, Matthew Chase, Tait and Teague Stahovic, and newly great-great-nephew Cole Smacher. A walk through visitation will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705. Masks and face coverings are required at all times at the funeral home and please practice social distancing while paying your respects. Private funeral services with interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre, will be held at the convenience of the family.
