Mario Malvizzi of Laflin, passed away Saturday morning, June 3, 2017 at his home with his family by his side.

Born in 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Mario and Maria (Perratone) Malvizzi. Mario spent his childhood and early teens in Italy, returning to America in 1947. He received his primary and secondary education in Italy and completed his education at Temple University, Philadelphia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. Mario spent most of his career in sales and marketing. He served as manufacturer representative of Playtex Family Products, Dover, DE, for over 30 years, retiring in 1993.

Mario was a Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the Pacific Fleet. For his service he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, The National Defense Medal, Navy Occupation with Asia Clasp, The United Nations Service Medal, The Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the VFW, The Italian American Veterans, Post #1, Tin Can Sailors Association and the USS Eversole Association.

Mario served the community as a member of Laflin Borough Council and as President of the Oakwood Park Townhouse Association. He served St. Maria Goretti Church as a member and chairperson of various committees and serving two terms as member of the Pastoral Council. He was most proud of serving on the Church Building Committee and on the Parish Center Study and Fund Raising Committee. He served in the Liturgical Ministries as an Adult Altar Server, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and Sacristan.

Photography was a nearly life long hobby and besides being the family photographer, he donated his photo skill as audio/visual coordinator of St. Maria Goretti Church, and performed volunteer photo work while serving in various church and civic organizations. After retiring, Mario devoted his time as a volunteer for RSVP under various capacities and served as a Volunteer Ambassador at the Veterans Medical Center, Plains, Twp. He was a graduate of Masters Leadership, Wilkes-Barre, and served on the Advisory Board. Mario had a lifelong passion for travel. With his wife Cheta, he traveled extensively in America and Europe.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mario and Maria and his step-father Germano Enrico.

Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, the former Cheta Bortz, sons Marc and his wife Debbie, Laflin, John, Kingston, grandchildren Brian, Christopher, Nina, Drew and Marc, Jr., great-grandson Travis Mendoza, and his sister Gloria Buscaglione, Italy.

A Mass of Christian Burial with Military Honors accorded by the U.S. Navy will be held Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 11:00 am in St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin, PA 18702, with Father James J. Walsh, J.C.L., Pastor, officiating. The Parish Rosary Group will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary in the Church 30 minutes before the Mass. All are invited to attend. Private entombment will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Family and friends may call from 10:30 am till the time of mass at St. Maria Goretti Church on Tuesday. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial donations may be made to St. Maria Goretti Church in Mario’s memory.
