Leona Theresa Huntzinger Van Valkenburg, 92 of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, at the United Methodist Homes, Wesley Village Campus, Jenkins Twp., where she had been a resident for the past three years.

Leona was born to George F. and Mary A. (Stilp) Huntzinger on July 21, 1921 in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  She was one of 15 siblings and outlived them all.   She graduated high school from St Anne’s Academy, also in Wilkes-Barre.  Professionally, Leona worked as assistant manager in her family’s business– “Huntzingers 5 & 10 Store” on Hazel Street in Wilkes-Barre until the store closed in 1977; at which time she transitioned as a secretary locally at Mercy Hospital.

Leona’s personal life was a full and vibrant one.  She married Edgar L. Van Valkenburg in June, 1946 here in Wilkes-Barre.  She and Edgar enjoyed a fulfilling married life until Edgar’s death in May, 1965.  Leona then continued on her own, totally devoted to her family and participated in many family events.  She also loved to travel and was always lifting other’s spirits; an “Angel” to all who knew her.  In February, 1989, Leona married Edgar’s younger brother, Fred D. Van Valkenburg and they shared a rewarding relationship for over twenty years until Fred died in November, 2010.

Leona was the last surviving sibling of her parents’ fifteen children and she was beloved by all!  She had no biological children but Leona is survived by her two stepsons:  Frederick D. Van Valkenburg Jr. and wife Sue, of Aledo, Texas, and David W. Van Valkenburg and wife Darlene, of La Plata, Maryland.  Six step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren also survive her.  In addition, her niece/adopted sister Jo Anne Cossaboon from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and additional nieces, nephews and cousins, survive her.

They all loved her like a mother and grandmother.  She married brothers, many years apart, but was loved by her nephews and her step grandchildren loved her as a grandmother!  She was loved and will be greatly missed.

Funeral will be held Friday at 9:30 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street  Plains, PA  18705 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Benedict Parish, 155 Austin Avenue  Wilkes-Barre, PA with Father Joseph Kearney, pastor, officiating.  Interment will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp.  Friends may call Thursday from 5:00  to 7:00 PM  at the funeral home.
