Kathleen Serafin, 71 of East Stroudsburg, passed away Monday afternoon, August 9, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital – Monroe Campus, Stroudsburg.

Born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Bajerski) Serafin.

Kathy, upon graduation from James M. Coughlin High School in 1967, entered the convent of the Bernadine Franciscan Sisters, Reading, Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate degree from Villanova University. She continued her graduate studies at Pennsylvania State University, University Park.

As a religious known as Sister Joseph Helene, she served in various schools in Florida and in the Scranton Diocese including St. Stanislaus Parish, Wilkes-Barre and the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Dickson City. After leaving religious life, she was principal at Lourdesmont, Scranton and at Monsignor McHugh, Cresco.

Kathy was an avid golfer and was the Glen Brook Golf Club Senior Women’s Champion in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Kathy was well respected and admired by all who knew her. She positively impacted so many students in her years of education. Kathy was most notably known for her incredibly generous and giving nature.

She was preceded in death by her partner and best friend Ann Marie Toloczko, sister Rosemary “Cookie” McCarthy, sister-in-law Ellen Serafin, and niece Colleen Wilcox.

Surviving are her brothers Joseph Serafin, Colorado Springs, CO, and Edward Serafin and his wife Bridget, Wilkes-Barre, sister Dorothy Yelland and her husband Thomas, Wilkes-Barre, brother-in-law John McCarthy, Plains, 12 nieces and nephews, and 20 great-nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at 10:00 am at Saints Peter & Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains, PA 18705.  Inurnment will be held in the parish cemetery, Plains.  Family and friends may call Wednesday morning from 9:00 am until the time of Mass at church.  Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA  18705.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children´s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in Kathy’s name.
