Joseph W. Baluta, 94, of Plains Township, passed away Monday morning, February 1, 2016 at the inpatient unit of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.

Born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Walter and Frances (Petrycz) Baluta.

Joseph attended James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, and graduated from Kingston Vocational School. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippine Islands, New Guinea and Luzon. He received The Purple Heart Medal for being wounded on New Guinea in January of 1944. He was also awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

He was employed as a Carpenter for Bechtel Corporation until his retirement. Joseph was a former member of Sacred Heart Church, Plains, and currently a member of SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains.

He is preceded in death by his Brothers Walter, Alex, John and Stanley Baluta, and Sisters Sophie Korick and Lottie Magalski.

Surviving are his Wife of 69 years the former Thelma Benzi, Plains, Son Delbert Baluta and his wife Tammy, Greencastle, PA, and Daughter Lynn Edwards, Saratoga, California; grandchildren Marni, Meaghan and Ryan Baluta, Greencastle, PA, Lorelle and Dale Edwards, Saratoga, California, nephews and nieces.

Funeral will be held Friday, February 5, 2015 at 9:00 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home Inc., 20 South Main Street Plains with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains, with Father John C. Lambert, pastor, officiating. Interment with Military Honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plains.

Family and friends may call Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
