Frederick P. Lipka, 89 of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Tuesday morning, September 27, 2022 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, PA.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on March 29, 1933, he was the son of the late Phillip and Helen (Grabowski) Lipka, and the step-son of the late Leonard Sokoloski.

Fred was a graduate of G.A.R. Memorial High School, Wilkes-Barre, and was a Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Airman (AN). A skilled Navy Pilot, he would take off and land on aircraft carriers. Upon his honorable discharge from active service, Fred attended Penn State University, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration in 1957.

Fred loved to work and had an amazing resume. He started as an Executive Trainee at The Bon Marche’, Seattle, WA, in 1957, was Director of Food Service at Joske’s Houston, Houston, TX, from 1957 to 1968, General manager of Sporting Arena’s Food Services and City Convention Center at The Astrodome, Houston, TX, from 1968 to 1970, General Manager of Newberry Estate Lodge and Country Club, Dallas, PA, from 1970 to 1972, Corporate Director of Food and Beverage at Woodward and Lothrop, Washington, D.C., from 1972-1975, Director of Restaurant Services at Giant Open Air Markets, Norfolk, VA, from 1975-1976, Food Broker-Partnership at CJM International, Norfolk, VA, from 1976-1983, and Director of Foods and Beverages at Montage Ski and Summer Resort, Scranton, PA, from 1984 to 1992.

After retiring from the Food and Beverage workforce in 1992, Fred began his second career in car sales, first at Ertley Motor World, and later at Ken Pollock Maserati, never retiring and worked until his passing. He was an avid Penn State Football fan and enjoyed going out to dinner with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife the former Shirley Lumsden in 1978.

Surviving are his son Phillip Lipka and his wife Trish, Laflin, sister Sandra Eck, Bowie, MD, nieces and nephews.

Fred’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of ICU at Geisinger Wyoming Valley for the wonderful care given to Fred, and to their family and friends for the love and prayers they received over the past two weeks.

Funeral Services with Military Honors accorded by the United States Navy, will be held Friday, September 30, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705. Family and friends may call Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Charity of one’s choice in Fred’s memory.
