Ella K. McCallin, 82 of Bear Creek Township, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born June 7, 1939 in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Florence (Kresge) Smacher.

Ella was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1957. After high school, Ella attended Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. Shortly after graduating Ella moved to Philadelphia to start her nursing career.

In 1982 Ella moved back to Bear Creek Township with her future husband, Martin L. McCallin and built their beautiful home and soon married.

Ella continued her career as a registered nurse at the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains, until she took an early retirement to care for her great niece and nephew after their births. During this time she would continuously call the toddlers “Honey”, in return they started calling her the same; this is how she received her nickname. Quickly Ella became known as “Honey” to the entire neighborhood and beyond. She absolutely loved the name and was so proud to have it.

Ella enjoyed shopping, trips to Atlantic City where she loved playing the slots as well as gardening around her house. She also had a green thumb when it came to plants, especially with Christmas Cactuses. Ella had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.

She was preceded in death by her husband Martin J. McCallin, brother Michael “Mick” J. Smacher, and brother-in-law Joseph “Rock” Stahovic.

Ella is survived by her sister Carol Stahovic, Bear Creek Township; brother Donald Smacher, Forest Hill MD; nieces Lori Chase and her husband Matthew, Bear Creek Twp.; Donna Mandl and her husband Karl, Aberdeen, MD; nephews Rock Stahovic and his wife Robyn, Plains Township; Donald “DJ” W. Smacher Jr. and his wife Marla, Bel Air MD; great-nieces Ashley Chase and Rebecca Mandl; great-nephews Matthew Chase, Tait and Teague Stahovic, Ryan Mandl, Michael and Matthew Smacher; great-great nephew Cole Smacher.

Funeral services for Ella will be held Monday, April 11, 2022 at 10:00 am at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705, with Pastor Scott McGrady, officiating. Interment will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Family and friends may call Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the funeral home.
