Bette J. Gillespie, 89 of Dallas, passed away Friday morning, February 12, 2021 at the Mercy Center Nursing Unit, Dallas, where she had been a resident.

Born in Mandan, North Dakota, Bette was the daughter of the late Jalmer and Rose (Sybers) Strand.

Bette was a graduate of Mandan High School, Mandan, North Dakota, and earned her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing at the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul Minnesota. She was employed in the nursing field, and was Assistant Director of Nursing at Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre, and was Director of Nursing at The Meadows, Dallas, until her retirement.

Bette gave generously of her time and talents to many volunteer activities, especially through her parish, Gate of Heaven in Dallas, PA. She served as a Eucharistic minister for many years, delivered Holy Communion to the homebound, was an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and could be relied upon as a volunteer for almost any event at the church. After her retirement, she would also volunteer her time visiting the sick and elderly at the Mercy Center Nursing Unit in Dallas.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Arthur Segrave-Daly on December 26, 1991, her second husband John “Whitey” Gillespie on March 1, 2020, her son Matthew Segrave-Daly on July 14, 1979, and her brother Dr. Donald Strand.

Surviving are her children Mary Segrave-Primus and her husband Stephen, Garnet Valley, PA; Kathleen Daly-Leonard and her husband Anthony, Newtown Square, PA; Dr. Stephen Segrave-Daly and his wife Jody, Hershey, PA; John Segrave-Daly, Dallas, PA; Elizabeth Segrave-Daly and her husband Wavendean Fernandes, Pacifica, CA; David Segrave-Daly and his fiancée Kate Murray, West Chester, PA; Anne Gillooly and her husband Dennis, Cherry Hill, NJ; James Segrave-Daly and his wife Deanna, Havertown, PA; Paul Segrave-Daly, Lansdowne, PA; and Dr. Joan McFadden and her husband Matthew, Chester Springs, PA; 19 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 10:00 am at Gate of Heaven Church, 40 Machell Drive, Dallas, PA 18612 with Father Daniel Toomey, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be held in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton section of Wyoming. Due to the ongoing pandemic, restrictions have been put in place. Those attending the Funeral Mass, please follow the practice of social distancing, and masks are required at all times at the church. Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to The Mercy Center, 301 Lake Street, Dallas, PA 18612 in Bette’s Memory.
