Barbara Ann Munley

August 26, 2024

Barbara Ann Munley, 86 of Jenkins Township and formerly of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, passed into eternal rest Monday morning, August 26, 2024, at Third Avenue Health and Rehab Center, Kingston, PA.

Born on September 19, 1937, in Newark, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Christopher and Fleda H. (Baughan) Leonard.

Barbara was a graduate of West Side High School, Class of 1954.  She had several employers over the years, Rutgers University, F&F Felger, Lincon Electronics to name a few.  She retired to Murrells Inlet, SC where she spent most of her time in the community pool, at the beach or strolling through Brookgreen Gardens holding hands with our Father,  Grammie Darlin, we loved her more than great big chocolate chip waffles. Mom learned Ballet and Tap dancing when she was a child and continued those exercises over her lifetime. On occasion, she could be convinced to dance at her nursing home.

Both she and our father taught Sunday school at the First Presbyterian church in Springfield, NJ.

Mom who ran the cool house in the neighborhood. We had many friends gather for LOTS of occasions and everyone called her Mom. To this day, they always say “tell Mom I said Hi.” She hid Easter eggs every year, well into our “teens.” The one in the sugar bowl was always the special one. One Easter morning after a night of a gathering, we had someone stay over, waking up a little groggy in the morning. He was completely shocked and confused when he found an Easter Eggs in the sugar bowl. We all shared a big laugh together and we reminisced about every year.

Talented Artist and Poet, her published book: “The Seventh Tiger” was accepted into the Library of Congress. This short collection of poems was her voice. As the youngest of seven, her words were not always heard, but she learned to speak loudly over the years until someone listened to her.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William Munley on October 18, 2017, brother Christopher Leonard, Jr., sisters Ruth Pfleger, Viola Kelleher, Elizabeth Beckmann, Nina Bereza, and Jean Thompson, and beloved niece Betty Lou Beckmann.

Surviving are her sons William J. Munley and his wife Angela, Jenkins Twp., PA, and Scott L. Munley and his wife Janette, Dutton, VA, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces, and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705.

Our Mom suffered from several mental illnesses that she kept hidden from most of the world. Her generation was taught to hide them and never discuss them outside the family. We’d like to break from that fear and embrace the support available.

Memorial donations if desired, may be made to Northeast Counseling Services 663 E. Main Street Nanticoke, PA 18634  Attn: Malory Kulick, in Barbara’s memory.
