Joseph F. Flanagan, 85 of Laflin, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 30, 2017 at the inpatient unit of Celtic Hospice, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre, with his family by his side. Born in Pittston, he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Mary (Egan) Flanagan. He was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School, Georgetown University and the University Of Pennsylvania Law School. He served in the United States Army as a member of the 322nd Military Police Criminal Investigation Unit on active duty at the time of the Berlin Crisis during the Kennedy Administration. He began his law practice with the firm of Reynolds and Doran in Wilkes-Barre; thereafter was a partner with Attorney John Doran and later with the law firm of Flanagan Doran Biscontini and Shaffer. Thereafter he was associated in the practice of law with Donald D. McFadden, Esquire and presently is associated with the law firm of Burke Vullo Reilly Roberts in Forty Fort, Pennsylvania. Atty. Flanagan is a member of the Luzerne County Bar and has practiced before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and Superior Court and the United States Federal District Court for the past fifty-nine years. Atty. Flanagan previously served as a bank director for the First National Bank of Pittston and for the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Pittston. He previously owned and operated Egan Oil & Supply Company, a distributor of petroleum products in the Greater Pittston Area. He has served as counsel to the Diocese of Scranton and many of its parish communities throughout his career and served as solicitor for Laflin Borough for many years. He is a past president of the Pittston Kiwanis Club, the Serra Club of Wyoming Valley, the University of Pennsylvania Club of Luzerne County, and The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Pittston. Atty. Flanagan was Toastmaster when then Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy was the Keynote Speaker in 1964 at the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Dinner, Pittston. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston, and currently a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin, where he served as a church lector. Atty. Flanagan was married for fifty-two years to the former Regina D. Kelley who passed away on September 1, 2012. Atty. Flanagan and his late wife were the parents of three children, Michael J. Flanagan and his wife Linda, Maureen A. Flanagan and the late Sheila Flanagan-Sheils, who passed away on October 7, 2013. He has six grandchildren, Kaitlyn Flanagan, Erin Flanagan, Ryan Flanagan, Kelley Flanagan, Robert P. Sheils, IV and Claire Regina Sheils. Joseph will be remembered and missed for the love and care of his family, his kindness and gentle nature, his Irish Humor, and living his life as a true gentleman until his final days. His family would like to thank the staff at Regional Hospital, Scranton, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains, Celtic Hospice, Wilkes-Barre and a special thank you to Joyce, Sylvia, Amy, and the staff at Wesley Village Rehabilitation Center, Jenkins Twp., for their wonderful care of their dad. Funeral will be held Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 9:15 am at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, Pittston, PA 18640. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery, Pittston. Family and friends may call Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
