Aloys J. Baloga, 91 of Jenkins Twp., passed away Sunday evening, February 5, 2017 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, with his family at his side.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Andrascik) Baloga.

Al was a graduate of St. Nicholas High School, and was an Army Veteran of World War II. He served proudly attaining the rank of Sergeant and serving as a squad leader with the 87th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-1945. In March of 1945, Al was wounded during a German shelling near the Moselle River, Germany, earning The Purple Heart Medal. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, Al attended George Washington University, Graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in Government.

He was employed as a Federal employee with the U.S. State Department, The Department of Defense, The Social Security Administration, ending his career as a deputy commissioner in the U.S. Labor Department. Al was one of the co-founders and the first President of the Cross Valley Federal Credit Union, Wilkes-Barre, and subsequently as director-secretary. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin, The Knights of Columbus, Assumpta Council 3987, the Wilkes-Barre American Legion, Post 0837, The Disabled American Veterans, The North End Slovak Club, and volunteered for the American Red Cross for many years.

He was preceded in death by his Sisters Mary R. Brown, Sr. M. Virginia (Irene) Baloga, SS.C.M., and Emily E. Jerista, Brother Albert F. Baloga.

Surviving are his wife the former Marion Grozalis. Al and Marion would have celebrated 65 years of marriage on February 9, 2017. Also surviving are his Sons Mark Baloga and his wife Amy, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Bert Baloga, Charlotte, North Carolina, Daughters Rebecca Caffrey and her husband Michael, Easton, PA, Virginia Godleski and her husband Scott, Spring Hill, Florida, and Valerie Smith and her husband Kevin, Dallas, PA, grandchildren Mary, Kristen, Samantha, Timothy, Amanda, Anthony, Michael, Marnie, Jessica, Andrew, Kirby, Shelby, and Katherine, great-grandchildren Mia, Bryna, Elise, Marco, and Benjamin, several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 am in St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin, PA 18702, with Father James J. Walsh, J.C.L., Pastor, officiating. The Parish Rosary Group will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary in the Church 30 minutes before the Mass. All are invited to attend. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Sacred Heart Slovak Cemetery, Dorchester Drive, Dallas, PA. Friends and family may call Saturday morning from 10:00 am till 11:00 am at the Church.
