Alice Zaley, 96 of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Thursday morning, May, 2022 at River Street Manor Nursing Center, Wilkes-Barre, were she had been a resident.

Born August 26, 1925 in Plains, one of eleven children born to Ukrainian immigrants, the late John and Paraska (Popadiuk) Melnyk of Plains. She was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School. She was bookkeeper for the family’s business from 1955 to the earlier 1980’s when the business was sold. Alice enjoyed reading, swimming, and gardening. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Stephen Zaley on August 8, 1997; brothers Walter, Joseph and William; and sisters Ann Wrobel, Mary Mohanco Chesterfield, Margaret Babak, Sophia Melnyk and Helen Melnyk.

Surviving are her daughter Susan Zaley Oistad, Etowah, NC, son Stephen R. Zaley, and his wife Barbara, Mills River, NC; grandson, Justin Oistad, Tokyo, Japan, brother George Melnyk, Endicott, New York; and sister Irene Melnyk, Plains, and 17 nieces and nephews.

Divine Liturgy will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 10:30 am at Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 635 North River Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18705, with Father Myron Myronyuk, officiating. Entombment will be held in Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville, PA. Arrangements entrusted to the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, PA 18705.
